about

Rückverzauberung (Reverse Enchantment) is a label-travel-project of Wolfgang Voigt that started in 2010 and appears at irregular intervals on different labels and formats. Having visited Kompakt, Profan and the Berlin Arts/music label EN/OF, Rückverzauberung 6 will now appear on the Cologne Label Magazine. This is no coincidence: one of Voigts, and of Magazine’s, leit-motifs is a combination of severity and the largest possible degree of freedom. Said severity in Voigt’s work is usually manifested in quantised beats. This, of course, is the case in almost all dance productions where quantization is one of the main rules of DJing. However, only few artists exist who do not revert to realigning the rhythm for such practical reasons but who are explicitly interested in the effects of an evenly sequenced bass drum. Voigt, undisputedly, is one of the most important representatives of the latter (see STUDIO 1, GAS, etc.). On Magazine 7, Rückverzauberung (Reverse Enchantment) 6.3 is a good example of such a working technique. And this piece is also the first return trip to the spheres of GAS since the almost museal retrospective of the legendary project in the year 2008! Voigt’s music has always been based on contradictory sound constructs, oscillating between harmony and atonality. But on the beat-free Rückverzauberung 6.1 and 6.2, sounds and structures are (reversely) enchanted in such a bizarre-abstract manner that it is difficult to draw a comparison to other pieces from Voigt’s catalogue. Due to his very own technique of deconstruction/reconstruction to the essential/substantial, sounds that are somewhat familiar seem completely new. Voigt calls this Dedivination. He uses it to question the classical, narrative storytelling/composition structures and divests them of their form until new land is reclaimed... Magazine feels honoured to be able to publish this essential record.
